Hi all,
Happy Valentine’s Day!!
We had an eventful day making sour-dough shaped hearts and cards using handprints! The final result? See below!

Like what you see? Well, here’s a step-by-step guide on how to get your little ones to do a Valentine’s Day card and sour-dough shaped heart that you can keep forever!
Materials required:
- Valentine’s Day Card
- A4 Paper
- Scissors
- Glitter
- Glue
- Pencil/Rubber
- Red Paint
- A heart shape (optional – if you trust your drawing skills you might not need this)
- Sour-dough heart shape
- Salt
- Flour
- Red Paint
How to create our Valentine’s Day masterpiece?
- Fold an A4 paper sheet in half and draw a heart over this – ensure that the left side of the heart does not end before the fold of the paper and cut it out, this way you’ll have a heart shaped mini-card.

- Once you have the heart shaped mini-card cut out, cut out a small red shaped heart. Paint the inside of the red heart with glitter and let it dry for 10-15 minutes.

- On the heart shaped mini-card we wrote ‘Be My Valentine!’ with a few hearts around it, and the small glittery heart was glued underneath. We also used some more glitter glue to go around the edges of the card.

- Inside the heart, on one side we got wrote ‘To: Mummy & Daddy!’ and on the other side a handprint of the little one.

- The first stage of your card is now complete, now onto the bigger picture! Grab an A4 paper sheet and let the little ones have some fun by doing some more hand printing! Once it is dry, fold the paper sheet in half and glue the heart-shaped card onto one of the sides. Again, let this dry nicely to ensure it sticks.

- Once complete, on the left side write ‘A little gift for you:’ and sticked with tape the sour-dough heart (we’ll give you the details below!) and on the right side glued a picture of the little one and wished the parents a Happy Valentine’s day!

To make the little sour-dough heart simply use the recipe in our previous post, instead of making handprints, simply make heart shapes and with a tooth pick make a small hole in the middle to allow for the tread to go through. Let these dry out in the oven as suggested and once hard enough, they’re ready to paint!
- Paint your sour-dough heart with red paint and let it dry.
- Once dry, put the thread through the small hole, give it a few knots so that the heart will stay in the right place and proceed with another layer of red-paint and allow to cool off.
- Use glitter glue and write the child’s initial in the middle and draw the edges of the heart with it as well.
- Allow it to dry for 15-20 minutes, once complete you can use it as a small gift on the Valentine’s Day card!
I hope you have just as much fun making these as we did!
